Baby Booties to Match Berry Sweater

April 28, 2011
Errata: For the large size of booties on the instep, it should read:
Row 1: k20(24), k2tog, sl 1, bring yarn to front (byf), turn work
It originally read (25).
I am sorry for the inconvenience. I am working on a downloadable PDF for this pattern, with clearer instructions and corrections.

More Errata:
The increase instructions have been confusing, so I have clarified the increase instructions to make it easier to follow.

Booties:

Size: Small (3-6 months) and large (6-12 months). (Changes for large size are in brackets)

Materials:
1 pair 4mm (size 6) needles and 3.75 needles (for ribbed top)
1 ball Microspun, in Magenta or French Vanilla (leftovers from sweater will be more than sufficient)
tapestry needle
contrasting color ribbon (if desired), about 2 feet per bootie.

Pattern Notes:
•Worked starting from sole.
•Increases are worked by picking up the horizontal bar between the next two stitches and knitting into the back of it. (M1)
•Instructions are given for a lace top and a ribbed top.
•Leave a long yarn end after casting off for easier seam sewing.
•ssk is: slip next two stitches onto right needle knitwise, insert left hand needle back into stitches, and knit together.

Sole & Toe shaping:
Cast on 23(29) sts
Knit 2 rows
Row 3: k11(14), M1, k1, M1, k11(14)

large size:

Instep:
Row 1: k20(24), k2tog, sl 1, bring yarn to front (byf), turn work
Row 2: sl 1,k6(8), k2 tog, sl 1, byf, turn work
Repeat Row 2 until you have 23(29) sts left. Knit to end of row. (Large: increase one stitch at the end of this row.)

Lace top:
Row 1: k2, *k2tog, yo, k1, yo, ssk, k2* Repeat
Row 2: purl
Row 3: k1, *k2tog, yo, k3, yo, ssk* repeat to last st, k1
Row 4: Purl

Repeat these 4 rows, 4 times for small, 5 times for large. Cast off with a larger size needle.

Ribbed top:
Change to 3.75 mm needles and CC yarn.
Work a k1, p1 rib for 2.5(3) inches. Cast off with a larger size needle. For a seamless top which can be folded over (as shown), switch to double-pointed needles, inc 1 st, and work in the round.

Thank you for the pattern! I recently made the booties for a friend due in September. I can't tell you how happy I am with them. I will post about them and show a photo when my friend receives the gift.

Thank you for sharing your pattern. I just finished the first bottie, with a ribbed cuff. My best friend is having a boy in less than two months, and I'm making a pair in mint green with a blue cuff. :)

I have just finished knitting a little outfit for my neighbours baby due in September and these will finish it off nicely.....thank you!!

Is there a gauge for this pattern?

I would just like to say a BIG thank you. I am left handed and a fairly experienced knitter, but knitting bootees have always proved a problem. This pattern works really well and I am very pleased with the finished result.

i am confused with the amount of stitches. i am making the smaller pair, which meant i needed to cast on 25, but it doesnt coincide with the stitches in row 3. please help!

Rachel said...

On Row 3 you begin making increases, so your total number of stitches grows to 27, then row 4 has 29, etc until you have 33 total after row 9.
Then the instep is created by making the k2tog decreases which will bring you back down to 23 sts for the cuff. Happy knitting!

thanks so much for answering my question, but there still is a problem. in row three, including the increases there are only 26 stitches. am i missing something?

Hi, thanks for this pattern! I started out well, but seem to be stuck on the instep. If I follow the instructions on the pattern, I still have stitches left on my row! What am I doing wrong?
I would appreciate your help, my cousin is due in August!

i am having the same problem as sarah. i have a lot more stitches than i should. this pattern needs to be edited.

I just wanted to say these are the most adorable and EASY to follow instructions I've had the pleasure to knit, have forwarded the site to my daughter, thanks so much

Rachel said...

You're supposed to have stitches left on your needles when you make a turn on the instep.

Thank you for this adorable ensemble. Any chance you might create a matching mitten pattern?

Stuck on row 3!? The number of stitches does not add up. If I start with 31 on row 1 and knit 14+1+14 on the row 3, I have stitches left on my needle. What do I do?

Rachel said...

Oh dear! I have indeed made a mistake! The small booties should be cast on with 23 sts and the large with 29 stitches. So sorry for the confusion this has caused!

So I just finished the first row of the lace top on the small pattern...is it suppose to end on a knit? because I just ended on the ssk.......

Anonymous said...

If you had 23 sts total on your needles when you started the lace, then you will end with k2, not ssk. You may have made too many decreases, or not enough. The lace is a repeat of 7 stitches, so if you're only off by one stitch you can re-center it. You will need that knit stitch at the end as a selvage.

Anonymous said...

Thanks, I had 23 stitches but I think I might have knit to the wrong end from the instep-I did the slip and turn and knit the rest of the larger side to the end of the row. I did recenter on the 3rd repeat of the lace :).

Another question though for the ssk do you slip the two together or separate?

Anonymous said...

I slip them separately.

I am having a problem I tried both the smaller and larger pattern but by the time I got to the third row I didn' have enough stitches to do the last "knit 11 sts". In both cases I was short 2 stitches to make the 11 or 14 in the larger bootie. Help please?

Anonymous said...

What method are you using to make your increases? If you are knitting into the back and front of a stitch, then you'll have to do that on the 11th and 13th sts, not after them.

Anonymous said...

To Tangle: Yes I am knitting into the back and front of the stitch for my increases. Is that for the small or larger version of the bootie?

Anonymous said...

yes, that's for the small version. For the large, knit 13, make knit in front & back, k1, knit in front & back again, k 13.
Hope this helps.

Hi, I think I am being very stupid and need help. I have only just started to learn how to knit and this is my first project. I have made the sole and don't know how to do the instep. Is it a continuation of the sole or do I cast off the sole and cast on to make the instep? What does turn mean? Please help as they are such pretty booties.

Tangle said...

To make the instep, you don't cast off anything. You will turn the work around in your hands and start knitting in the other direction on the other side of the work with the extra stitches left unworked. They will get their turn! bringing the yarn to the front before you turn will prevent a hole from forming when you do this.

I am about to proceed with these marvelous booties for my Great Grand Child who will be born in Oct. I am reading all the posts and hope that I can accomplish this task without much trouble.
It's been a long time since I was knitting and the term: ssk is not familiar. I guess I can find out but it would be nice if you tell me and wish me luck. I will try the lace tops for newborn.

Rachel said...

SSK is a left-leaning decrease. You slip the next two stitches knitwise, separately, and then knit them together.

You can substitute sl 1, k1, psso.

Thank you ! ever so much, This is one of the easiest and most adorable booties. I have turned out 5 pairs in 2 days for a couple of baby showers. Your instructions are perfect.

I do not feel so stupid now. When I am making the instep and am having trouble. When I am knitting on the 20 stitches, when do I pick up the rest of the stitiches on my needle

Thank you for the pattern, I am just a beginner & I am so lost at the instep. Is there a tutorial that will show me this step.

Got it figured out they are so precious !!

A question for the large size. After completing the instep (and I have 30 stitches after the increasing 1 stitch at the end of the row), I have a few more stitches on the right side (12) of the boot toe than the left side (10) - when what I think is the front of the boot is facing me (cast on tail is on right end). Does this sound right? Thank you!!!

These booties patterns are absolutely great! You are very talented.

Anonymous said...

do you have to use circular neddles? never used them before so if you do, does anyone know where i could learn (videowise)?

Rachel said...

the pattern is knit flat and sewn up later, so you can knit with straight needles.

I found this pattern using the Ravelry search engine, specifying DK (8 ply) patterns only but I note that you have used Microspun which I understand is only 5 ply. Do you think I will need to change needle sizes to get the correct tension when using 8 ply? Thanks very much for your assistance, and especially, for sharing this great pattern. Clicketynick

Hello, I'm a fairly new knitter, but am having trouble with this pattern. I've read it over and over and I can't figure out what I did wrong... The trouble is, I followed the directions (I thought) but what I have is what appears to be the heel, and then I began on the ribbing for the cuff, however there isn't a toe! Everything was going well...I don't understand why I don't have a toe. Like I said, I've gone over and over the directions and I'm certain I followed them correctly. Any ideas??

Hi, just trying these - got to row 4 "Row 4: k1, inc1, k23(29), inc1, k1" - but I can only get 21 between the two increases? Start with 23, inc 2sts on Row 3 = 25sts, 2sts used at either end of row (1 for k1, 1 for inc1) = 21sts in centre? Please confirm. Thank you :) x

Hi Tangle,
I hope I'm not offending you when I say this, but I am really eager to make the Berry Baby Booties for my daughter. I am a fairly experienced knitter but the pattern is proving complicated to follow. I think you forgot to take into account that you use up a stitch to make an increase, so - for example - in row 3 of the sole, after you have cast on 29, it's impossible to (for the large size) K 14 on either end with two increases and a K1 in the middle - that's more than 29 sts right there. You wind up with 31 sts and then in row 4 you need all those sts without the increases. If you K13 on either end instead, row 3 works but then you get stuck on row 4 where that requires 31 sts without the increases. I hope I am making sense. I'm going to try the pattern as written by casting on 31 sts instead of 29 and see what happens, but maybe, no offense intended but maybe you should try it as written and see what I mean. I've not gotten past row 3 yet so I'm nervous about the instep but I'll wing it and hope for the best. These look charming and precious, just like my baby, so I'm eager to get this right! Thanks.

Nan said...

Success! The larger size booties can be made perfetcly, as written, by casting on 31 sts instead of 29.

Nan, thanks for your comment. I will post a clarification in the pattern notes.
