To make the instep, you don't cast off anything. You will turn the work around in your hands and start knitting in the other direction on the other side of the work with the extra stitches left unworked. They will get their turn! bringing the yarn to the front before you turn will prevent a hole from forming when you do this.

What method are you using to make your increases? If you are knitting into the back and front of a stitch, then you'll have to do that on the 11th and 13th sts, not after them.

Thanks, I had 23 stitches but I think I might have knit to the wrong end from the instep-I did the slip and turn and knit the rest of the larger side to the end of the row. I did recenter on the 3rd repeat of the lace :).

If you had 23 sts total on your needles when you started the lace, then you will end with k2, not ssk. You may have made too many decreases, or not enough. The lace is a repeat of 7 stitches, so if you're only off by one stitch you can re-center it. You will need that knit stitch at the end as a selvage.

On Row 3 you begin making increases, so your total number of stitches grows to 27, then row 4 has 29, etc until you have 33 total after row 9.
